Several Whippets break records in the pool

The Whippet boys swim team was dominant in handing Delavan-Darien a 100-70 loss when the two met up for a dual meet early last week and four Whitewater High School records were broken in the process.

Jon Zidmars stole the show during the meet, going in the record books with three individual events and as part of a relay team that notched the fourth.

Zimdars set a new 200 Individual Medley record with a time of 2:05.09; broke the 50-meter split during the 200 Free Relay at 22.9; replaced the 100 Backstroke best time with a 57.14 finish; and the 200 Free Relay team of Zimdars, Benny Liang, Wentao Guo and Jason Shelbourn hold the new mark at 1:34.87.

“This was a big meet for us because it was the first of our conference dual meets and we wanted to start out with a win,” head coach Joan Domitrz said. “We saw many good things from the team. Everyone on the team went after all of their races! Each of the last four meets the team has swum they have shown improvements in all areas speed, technique, starts and turns.”

Complete first place finishes for WHS included: 200 Medley Relay swam by Andrew Gildner, Seth Bols, Kit Zoesch and Karlo Martinovic; 200 Free by Guo; 200 Individual Medley Zimdars; 50 Free by Shelbourn; 100 Free by Benny Liang; 200 Free Relay swim by Zimdars, Shelbourn, Guo and Liang; 100 Backstroke by Zimdars; 100 Breast by Liang; 400 Free Relay swam by Liang, Bols, Andrew Gildner and Guo.

Second place finishes included: 200 Free by Gildner; 200 Individual Medley by Bols; 500 Free Gildner; 100 Breast by Bols; 400 Free Relay swam by Shelbourn, Kit Zoesch, Jack Downs and Zimdars.

More records broken

At the Milton Red Hawk Invitational, the Whippets finished third and broke two more WHS records in the process.

Zidmars now owns the 200 Freestyle in 1:50.49 and the 200 Free Relay team of Zimdars, Liang, Guo and Shelbourn – the same four that broke the previous record just days before – notched a new best of 1:34.54.

First place finishers for Whitewater, in addition to the two mentioned above included: 200 Medley Relay team of Shelbourn, Liang, Zimdars and Guo; 100 Fly by Zimdars; 100 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke by Liang.

Other top Whippet finishers included Shelbourn, who took third in the 50 Freestyle and fourth in the 100 Backstroke; Guo, third in the 200 Individual Medley and fifth in the 100 Backstroke; and Gildner with two sixth place finished, in the 200 and 500 Freestyles.
