The Whitewater High School girls basketball team won a relatively easy victory over Big Foot week, 65-44, once the offense found its footing behind Rebekah Schumacher’s 19 points.

The game started a bit slowly, as both teams’ defenses were able to keep the opposing offense off balance.

In the second quarter however, the Whippets broke the game open with a 22-13 run that gave them a 12-point lead going into the half.

Whitewater came out of the locker room determined to keep the energy going and did just that, outscoring Big Foot 20-8 in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was more of the same with Whitewater’s defense only allowing Big Foot to close the ending gap by three points.

It was a team effort in scoring for the Whippets. In addition to Rebekah Schumacher’s 19 points, Sarah Schumacher and Kailey Reynolds each had 13 points, while Myriama Smith-Traoere and Whitney Treder each added seven.

“I was happy our girls came out with a higher intensity level tonight, something we need to continue to maintain throughout the season. Big Foot was a quick, scrappy young team,” head coach Judy Harms said after the game.

Two areas the Whippets could improve on are three-point shots, with only three made during the game against Big Foot, and drawing fouls with Whitewater hitting eight of 12 attempts while their opponent went to the line 21 times on the night.

However, where the team does excel it’s noteworthy – from the midrange game on down into the paint. And in playing defense, Whitewater is a hard team to beat, something they proved once again as they continue an undefeated season.
