On Tuesday night, the Whitewater High School girls volleyball team had one goal in mind: extend the season. The Whippets, a No. 7 seed going into the first round of regional play, accomplished that mission by beating No. 2 seeded Delavan in three out of five games (25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25 and 15-9.)

Final home game

In the Whippets final home game of the season, Stoughton was simply too much as Whitewater fell 13-25, 27-25, 12-25 and 23-25.

The last few weeks have been tough, yet the Whippets fought back in this one.

“(We) were determined to battle and not give up,” coach Kathy Bullis said. “I’m really proud of the strides they made tonight.”

The team came out admittedly flat in the first set, yet rallied back behind strong service and were able to pull out a close second set. Unfortunately, using up all that energy cost the girls in the third set, as they fell by 13 points.

Re-grouping, the team overcame some service problems but couldn’t quite turn the corner, losing by a mere two points.

Myriama Smith-Trajore led the team with 14 kills, Emilie Kachel had 18 digs and Carmen Wyatt had 21 assists.

One up, one down

Things started off well in the Rock Valley Conference tournament for the Whippets as they defeated Parkview 25-8, 20-25, 15-7. In a tournament with many possible opponents, matches are condensed to three sets, with the final being a race to 15.

Taking on Jefferson next, the Whippets fell 12-25, 25-19, 15-12 in a very tight duel.

“I’m very proud of how well they played against Jefferson who finished the regular season second (in conference),” Bullis said.

Against Edgerton, the next opponent, the Whippets struggled, 12-25, 16-25. Playing for seventh place in the tournament, Whitewater took on Big Foot but could not end on a high note, falling 13-25, 20-25, to finish at eighth place.

The Whippets played again Thursday night. Results from both of this week’s games will appear in next week’s issue.
