Thought the season didn’t end where they thought it might, players and the coach of the Whitewater High School girls basketball team were showered in Rock Valley North All-Conference awards and honorable mentions.

Senior Brooke Trewyn will finish off her record setting career at WHS with the Player of the Year award as well as first team all-conference. Trewyn, who missed a few games at the beginning of the season, bounced back to lead Whitewater to a 21-4 record and the conference title.

While lower than last season, Trewyn still led the team in scoring with 15.2 points per game, though she did try to get her teammates more involved as her average assists per game increased over last season. Trewyn shot .423 from the field and hit 48 shots from behind the 3-point line.

Coming through with a first team all-conference mention of her own was Sarah Schumacher, who gave the team a steady hand when things were rocky early in the season. Schumacher averaged 11.1 points per game, second most on the team.

Gaining a second team all-conference mention was freshman Myriama Smith-Traore, who burst onto the scene with 9.2 points per game. With Trewyn leaving the team to move on to college, Traore should be the next prolific scorer that Whitewater can unleash upon opponents in the conference for the next three years, if this season was an accurate indicator.

Dani Dolan and Kailey Reynolds both received honorable mentions on the all-conference lists.

Whitewater’s head coach of the girls, Judy Harms, was awarded Coach of the Year honors for traversing a very difficult beginning of the season and for guiding the team past McFarland for the conference title.

The Whippets, who were known for their offense going into the season, improved by learning how to play lockdown defense resulting in them giving up less than 35 points per game on the year.
