Kailey Reynolds, Brooke Trewyn and Sarah Schumacher combined for 40 points as the Whitewater High School girls basketball team defeated Evansville last week, 66-39 in round one of the WIAA Tournament.

It was more of the same dominance we have seen from Whitewater this season, as a 21-4 opening period led to a relatively easy victory. The Whippets led 37-11 at halftime.

“Every player received substantial minutes tonight,” head coach Judy Harms said after the game against Evansville. “Hopefully that will be key going into an extremely tough match-up tomorrow night.”

What Harms was alluding to was a Saturday date with Lakeside Lutheran, a tougher opponent than most teams had in the second round of the tournament.

“Our Regional bracket is one of the toughest in the state. We just need to take it one game at a time and see where the chips fall,” Harms said of the draw for a dance with Lakeside.

Playing hard and allowing the chips to fall is something the Whippets have learned to do quite well this season, and it served to their advantage again on Saturday, allowing Whitewater to walk away with a convincing 66-46 victory over Lutheran and claim the regional championship.

Harms was again pleased with the team’s overall effort.

“I love how this team plays, especially in the open court. Everyone played their role outstanding tonight, and that’s what makes us so tough,” she said.

It was another nice start for Whitewater, which dominated throughout the game. Throw in the six three-pointers made and another huge halftime lead and the Whippets put the game out of reach for Lakeside at 44-18 before the third quarter even began.

Brooke Trewyn led all scorers with 21, Rebekah Schumacher had 11 and Sarah Schumacher added 10 points to round out the top three players in points.

Back-and-forth fourth quarter falls Brodhead’s way

On Thursday night, the Whippets traveled to Janesville to take on Brodhead in the sectional semifinal. A slow offensive start for both teams had Whitewater up 14-11 at halftime.

Trewyn and Smith-Traore sat on the bench a portion of the third quarter due to foul trouble – Whitewater was called for 21 fouls in the game; Brodhead, 12.

The game remained close and was tied three times in the fourth quarter but the Cardinals pulled out a 47-42 victory, bringing the Whippets season to an end.

Complete coverage of the game will appear in the March 20 issue of the Whitewater Register and on mywalworthcounty.com.
