The Whitewater High School girls basketball team is on a roll. Actually, that’s an understatement so let’s try again. The Lady Whippets are completely dominating their opposition, just three games before the playoffs are due to start. The team is peaking at the right time, and a state run is certainly not out of the question.

The Whippets played three games last week, outscoring their opposition 216-107. The least they scored was 66 points; the most they gave up was 50. You could have mixed and matched any game last week and these girls would have won.

We mentioned Whitewater’s 80-50 victory over Beloit-Turner last week, but it bares touching on again because Turner nearly outscored the next two Whippet opponents combined. Against Parkview, Whitewater did not relent, scoring an easy 70-34 victory.

Sarah Schumacher had 22 points; Brooke Trewyn had 18. Together, the two outscored Parkview en route to notching another win during an impressive season. Again, the defense was stifling, giving up only one double digit quarter. On offense, Whitewater scored over 20 in three straight quarters, and then only put up three points in the fourth. It was that kind of game.

“We want to show no signs of backing down,” said head coach Judy Harms after the victory. “We want to grab a piece of the Conference Championship.”

In making that attempt, Whitewater allowed East Troy to score only 23 points in a 66-23 rout of last season’s conference champions. East Troy scored four points in the first quarter, and 11 points in the first half. The Trojans fared a bit better in the second half, putting up 12 points.

Brooke Trewyn scored 20 points, while Melanie Martinez added 11 and Myriama Smith-Traoere had 10 points of her own in the 43-point, dominating victory.

Sitting at 11-2 in conference, Whitewater still leads McFarland by half a game in the standings. All games from here going forward mean something, and it’s clear that the Whippets are not growing tired of blowing teams out.

Games against Jefferson, Edgerton and East Troy will finish out the season for the Whippets. But if either McFarland or Whitewater drop a game from here on out, they might very well be losing the conference title in the process.
