The Whitewater gymnastics team had the unenviable task of taking on four separate schools rolled into one for their second home meet of the year. The schools of Burlington, Badger, Wilmot and Catholic Central have created a D1 program that is currently second in the state. The Whippets fared well, but still fell 140.3 to 104.9, though a few members of the team had great individual performances.

“Julia Nelson came away with the first place all around finish and Alyson Quass had another superb no fall beam routine,” head coach Jennifer Galbrecht said. BBWCC took the top spots at every station during the meet.

On Monday, Whitewater took on Elkhorn and again several gymnasts pulled away with titles. Kelly O’Hara took first in the uneven bars (8.25,) first on the floor (8.775,) and the all-around (32.875;) Quass notched a third-place finish on vault (8.2,) and Nelson took second place on the floor (7.925.)

On Thursday the Whippets will finish out their dual meet portion of the season and final home meet, when they host Jefferson.

In the water

The Whitewater varsity boys swim team competed in the Southern Lakes Conference meet held at Delavan Saturday. Overall, the Whippets finished 5th out of seven squads competing.

Jon Zimdars finished in first place in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly. Jason Shelbourn earned first in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 freestyle.

The Whippets JV squad however, had a great conference swim meet at Elkhorn, finishing a respectable third place while showing continual improvement in the process.

Top finishers for the JV squad were as follows: David Hiebert finished first and Devin Samaranayake second in the 200 IM; Gabe Heller took second in the 200 Free and second again in the 100 Back; Hiebert won the 100 Fly; Mitchell Dazin took second in the 400 free. In the 200 Free Relay, swam by Chamath Gunawardena, Anatoly Parker, Gabe Heller and Mitchell Dalzin, the team took second place.

Head coach Joan Domitrz was very pleased after the meet. “Our future looks to be very bright. These boys worked hard all year and have consistently improved throughout the season,” she said.

Off day for wrestlers

Whitewater did not hold up too well in the Rock Valley Conference meet held in Clinton on Saturday. In finishing 7th out of 11 teams, the Whippets continue to have an up and down year. The top Whitewater wrestler was James Ehlen (2nd at 160#). Four additional Whippets placed third: Irving Sedano (113#), Max Reid (138#), John Saylor (152#) and Tommy DuVal (195#).
