Badger tennis competes at state

The Badger High School tennis team sent one singles player and two doubles teams to state Oct. 15 and 16 in Madison.

The doubles team of Giovanna Danna and Joanne Walczynski (24-5) had the most success winning their first match against Jami Turriff and Larissa Wagner (18-5) of DePere 6-2, 6-4. They lost their second match Oct. 16 to Emily Pepperl and Devon Bourget (18-1) 6-2, 6-3.

The doubles team of Katelyn Theisz and Olivia Stout (19-4) lost to Marli Stellhorn and Emma Koppa (29-3) of Nicolet in their first match Oct. 15. Singles player Claudia Huerth (14-7) lost her first match to Karolina Lungova (24-9) 6-4, 6-1.

Cross country wins SLC

The Badger girls cross country team won the Southern Lakes Conference championship on Oct. 17 with a score of 64 at the Southern Lakes Conference meet. Westosha Central took second with 70.

Top finishers for Badger included Sarah Hamilton (sixth, 20:39.62), Cassi Mennenoh (13th, 21:15.22), Lucci DiVito (14th, 21:22.80), Erin Wruk (15th, 21:24.81), Kayla Wruk (16th, 21:28.65), Pandora Butler (19th, 21:30.76), Cassidy Giese (28th, 22:11.41), and Rebecca Murray (36th, 22:54.04). Hamilton, Mennenoh, DiVito and Erin Wruk all earned all-conference recognition for finishing in the top 14.

The Badger boys finished second at the SLC Meet with a score of 52. Westosha Central won the title with a score of 16.

Top finishers for Badger included all-conferences runners Miguel Barrera (fifth, 17:06.18), Gustavo Gordillo (eighth, 17:14.29), Mario Gomez (10th, 17:21.15), and Cody Sadikoff (11th, 17:27.03). Jacob Dertz came in 18th (17:48.49), Logan Koehling took 19th (17:55.55), Will Hamilton finished 20th (17:56.45), and David Mikrut came in 24th (18:04.18).

Soccer wins tune-up

The Badger soccer team won its last game before entering Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional play against Waterford 3-0 on Oct. 13. Payton Aranda led the way with a goal and two assists. In addition to Aranda’s goal, Badger got goals from Ruben Aranda and Will Hamilton. Badger outshot Waterford (6-8-2, 4-5) 14-0.

Badger (14-7, 6-3) opened regional play as a No. 8 seed at home against No. 9 Kettle Moraine (6-11-2, 3-3-1 Classic Eight, tied for third) on Oct. 22. The team was upset by Kettle Moraine 5-0 in the WIAA regional semifinal.

Badger (14-8) came in as the No. 8 seed. Kettle Moraine (7-11-2) entered play as the No. 9 seed.

Kettle Moraine outshot the Badgers 13-3. Drew Winkowski scored twice for Kettle Moraine. Nick Zuchowski, Camdon Eaton, and J.T. Koch added single goals.

Swim

The still undefeated Badger swim team defeated Edgerton 135-34 on Oct. 13 and Burlington 102-68 on Oct. 20.

Against Edgerton, Badger took first, second, and third in the 100-yard freestyle (Rylee Kennell, 1:03.30, Xinying Chen, 1:05.22, and Emma Cavener, 1:05.71) to open the meet.

Badger pulled the hat trick in several other events as well:

  • 100-yard backstroke –Katelyn O’Brien, 1:07.43; Morgan Anderson, 1:07.79; Theresa VanSchyndel, 1:08.81;
  • 200-yard individual medley – Eden Wember, 2:31.13; Claire Koeppel, 2:31.14; Sarah Verzal, 2:38.34;
  • 50-yard freestyle – VanSchyndel, 26.72; Cora Rafe, 26.75; Grace Gillingham, 29.27;
  • 100-yard butterfly – Anderson, 1:06.93; O’Brien, 1:14.31; Alena Hanson, 1:15.53;
  • 100-yard backstroke – Rafe, 1:09.16; Chen, 1:19.51; Molly Dover, 1:21.62;

Other events:

  • 500-yard freestyle – first, Lauren Pryor, 6:00.97; second, Elise Wember, 6:14.68;
  • 200-yard freestyle relay – first, Eden Wember, Natalie Stratton, Pryor, Verzal, 1:52.28; second, Elise Wember, Gillingham, Hanson, Tessa Jahneke, 1:58.11;
  • 200-yard medley relay – first, Elise Wember, Rafe, O’Brien, Eden Wember, 2:05.64; second, Koeppel, Kennell, Chen, Pryor, 2:10.19;
  • 200-yard freestyle – first, Stratton, 2:13.13; second, Emma Coltman, 2:18.60;
  • 400-yard freestyle relay – first, Stratton, VanSchyndel, Dover, Anderson, 4:04.29; second, Koeppel, Kennell, Gillingham, Hanson, 4:20.50.

The Badgers also won the Fort Atkinson Invitational on Oct. 17 with 455 points. DeForest took a distant second with 346 points.

First-place finishes for Badger included:

  • Rafe in the 100-yard backstroke (59.38) and in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.42); and
  • 200 medley relay team of Rafe, O’Brien, Dover, and Stratton (1:54.97).

Second-place finishes included:

  • Dover in the 100-yard fly (1:04.03);
  • O’Brien in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.75); and
  • 400-yard freestyle relay team of VanSchyndel, Stratton, O’Brien, Rafe (3:52.37).

Against Burlington, Cora Rafe led the way with first place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.54) and 100-yard backstroke (59.75). Rafe was also on the first-place finishing 200-yard medley relay team of Rafe, Katelyn O’Brien, Molly Dover and Natalie Stratton (1:55.82) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Rafe, Theresa VanSchyndel, Eden Wember and Morgan Anderson; 3:55.63).

Other top finishes included:

  • First, second, and third in the 100-yard breaststroke – O’Brien (1:11.97), Grace Gillingham (1:13.90) and Rylee Kennell (1:15.40);
  • First in the 200-yard freestyle – VanSchyndel, 2:03.69;
  • First in the 100-yard butterfly – Dover, 1:04.22;
  • Second in the 200-yard individual medley – O’Brien, (2:22.92), the 50-yard freestyle – Stratton, (26.62), the 100-yard freestyle – Stratton (58.75).
