Elk gymnasts medal in We Believe Invite

Lyndsay Ryan won on the uneven bars and helped the Elkhorn Area High School gymnastics team to a second-place finish Dec. 7 in the We Believe Invite at Sun Prairie High School.

“We knew there would be some challenges going into this meet, since it was the first meet of the season,” Elks coach Amanda Merlo said of Sun Prairie. “However, we had some really strong performances and solid scores.”

Ryan won on the uneven bars with a score of 8.675. Elizabeth Lockhart finished fifth (8.1) and Marlie Lockhart came in seventh (7.95).

Brianna Taylor came in third on the balance beam with a score of 9.1. Elizabeth Lockhart finished sixth (8.525). Mount Horeb’s Grace O’Neill won the event (9.1).

Elizabeth Lockhart finished third in the floor exercise with a score of 9.4. Marlie Lockhart finished fifth (8.95) and Ryan seventh (8.775). Mount Horeb’s Drea O’Connell finished first (9.4).

Rebecca Wheeler led the Elks with a sixth-place finish in the vault (8.575). O’Connell won the event (9.525).

Elizabeth Lockhart and Ryan tied for fourth in the all-around. Each gymnast finished with a score of 33.875. O’Connell won the all-around (35.575).

The Elks finished with 135.375 points as a team. Mount Horeb won the invite (139.125). Sun Prairie finished third (129.675), Madison East/LaFollette came in fourth (116.150) and Monona Grove finished fifth (110.550).

“It was nice coming home with some medals,” Merlo said. “It gave the girls some confidence and motivation going forward. We have a lot of improvements and adjustments to make but it is exciting.”

The Elks compete today in the Elk Invite at Elkhorn Area High School. Elkhorn competes Dec. 17 in a non-conference meet at home against Milton.
