Riley Remington’s victory by pin at 152 pounds helped spur the Elkhorn Area High School wrestling team to victory Dec. 17 at home against Burlington in a Southern Lakes Conference dual meet.

The Elks are off until after Christmas. Elkhorn will wrestle Dec. 29 and 30 at UW-Whitewater in the Mid-States Wrestling Tournament.

Remington pinned Burlington’s Thomas Petrick in 5:03 in his first match wrestling at 152 pounds, and helped the Elks to a 46-22 victory.

“He was relentless,” Elks coach Ken Reynolds said. “We needed him to pin, and he was not going to give up.”

Burlington led the dual meet 19-18 before the match between Remington and Petrick. The Elks would not trail after Remington’s pin.

Bryce Jacobson at 160 scored a major decision and won 12-2 against the Demons’ Lance Otter and Konnor Mohr (170) pinned Burlington’s Louie Hardesty in 1:22.

“We needed those three to dominate, and (Remington) is where is started,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds said he told the Elks they could win big in the locker room before the match.

“I really felt we could put up a big number against Burlington,” Reynolds said. “I felt we were much better. Everyone went out and did their job. It was great execution.

“We’re better. We’re a lot better if we do what we are capable of doing.”

Daniel Stilling (126) trailed 5-0 and went to his back in the first period before rallying and pinning the Demons’ Ben Travis in 4:00.

“I felt that was big turning point, as far as momentum was concerned,” Reynolds said. “I think it was a great comeback from a freshman – to have that much poise. It was huge for the team.”

The Elks’ Grant Truesdale (106) pinned Zeke Isaacson in 1:40. Benji Peak (120) earned an 8-3 victory against Luke Iverson. Jordan Barr (220) pinned the Demons’ Juanye Thornton in 2:44.

The Demons forfeited matches at the 138 and 195-pound weight classes.

At 138, Burlington’s Josh Bird weighed in at 138.2 pounds and had to wrestle up at 145.

Also, Burlington’s Tristan Lind, who would’ve wrestled at 195, didn’t wrestle due to a shoulder injury.
