The Elkhorn Area High School girls golf team took on one of the area’s better teams Sept. 15 at Ives Grove Golf Links in Sturtevant in a Southern Lakes Conference dual meet against Union Grove.

Every member of the Broncos’ varsity broke 50 and Union Grove won 173-233.

The Elks played Tuesday at Ives Grove in the Southern Lakes Conference Tournament and Wednesday at Twin Lakes Country Club in an invitational tournament.

The invite at Twin Lakes was originally scheduled for Sept. 17 but was cancelled because of inclement weather.

“They took it to us,” Elks coach Steve Fisher said of the dual meet versus Grove. “They’re a great team. Their highest score was a 48. That’s a good problem to have when your highest score on the varsity is 48.”

Jessica Barrett led the Elks with a 55 over nine holes.

Carlie Hanson and Jena Jacobs each shot 58. Grace Christian finished at 62 and Grace Franz carded a 63.

“We’ve made some improvements over the last two matches,” Fisher said.

The Broncos’ Mari Suokko and Sarah Schuster each finished at 41 and led the field. Megan Koch finished at 44, Jackie Bianchi at 47 and Sydney Staaden at 48 for Union Grove.

Fisher said each of the Broncos started slowly on the Blue Course at Ives Grove, and said pin placements were tougher than expected.

“We had a rough start,” Fisher said. “The girls are hanging in there. They’re still working hard.”

The Elks next play Oct. 1 at Oak Ridge Golf Course in Milton in a WIAA Division 1 regional tournament.
