The Elkhorn Area High School softball team played nearly even with one of the state’s best April 21 at home in a Southern Lakes Conference game against Union Grove.

The Broncos, an honorable mention selection in Division 1 in the latest Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association state poll, scored three runs in the fourth and another four in the sixth and beat the Elks 8-0.

“Overall, we played poorly, but still – we’re in the game until late against a team like Union Grove,” Elks coach Jacob Schueller said. “That’s the silver lining. We’re still trying to get over that hump and beat one of the conference studs.”

The Elks played Westosha Central Tuesday at home in a SLC game. Central is ranked second in the latest WFSCA Division 1 state poll. The Elks play Badger today at Lake Geneva in a SLC game.

The Elks finished with three hits against the Broncos and committed five errors.

“Defensively, we made a few crucial errors in bunches again that came back to bite us,” Schueller said. “Errors are going to happen, but we can’t let one become two, and that’s a focus of ours going forward into the heart of our season.”

Schueller said he was disappointed in the Elks’ inability to adjust at the plate, but said the experience is something from which the Elks can learn. Morgan Rudolf, Hailey Wang and Amy Kolacke each finished with a hit for the Elks.

Schueller said Elks’ pitcher Carolyn Griswold spotted the ball well and used her off-speed repertoire effectively. Griwsold allowed nine hits and struck out six.

The Elks play Waterford May 5 at home in a SLC game.
