Netters open season with victory

The Elkhorn Area High School boys tennis team opened its Southern Lakes Conference season with a win April 6 at Lake Geneva Badger. The Elks defeated Badger, 5-2.

“We pulled off a close win in a tie breaker, with our third doubles team in a third set tie breaker of 7-4,” coach Donna Neshek said. “It was very exciting for our team to start conference.”

Ian Tuck and Collin Passler, playing for Elkhorn at No. 3 doubles, beat Badger’s Jack Wright and Temukelen Idnezun 6-3 in the first set before losing 6-1 in the second. Tuck and Passer won the third set 7-6 (7-4).

The Elks also won at No. 2 singles No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles.

Matt Nelson beat Mitch Dunway 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Aaron Wales beat Ahrum Zafar 6-0,7-6 (7-5) at No. 3 singles.

At No. 2 doubles, Drayke Webster and Noah Lindenberg defeated Adam Smith and Dorras Zakavskas. The two won the final two sets 6-0, 6-3 after losing the first 6-3.

Elkhorn played Kenosha Indian Trail in a non-conference dual meet April 14 at Kenosha and lost 4-3.

The Elks won matches at No. 3 singles, No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles.

At No. 3 singles, Wales beat Colin Bakkila 6-2, 6-3. Nelson, playing at No. 4 singles, beat his opponent 7-5, 6-3. Webster and Lindenberg at No. 1 doubles also won.

The Elks played Burlington at home Tuesday in a SLC dual meet. The Elks play today at Delavan-Darien in a SLC dual meet. The Elks play Saturday at Delavan-Darien in an invitational.
