The Elkhorn Area High School boys soccer team picked a fine time in the season to play its best soccer.

The Elks defeated Lake Geneva Badger 3-2 Sept. 30 at Badger High School in the second round of the Southern Lakes Conference Tournament.

Badger (12-6-1, 6-1 SLC) beat the Elks 2-1 Sept. 16 at Elkhorn in the SLC’s regular season.

Elkhorn (10-3-3, 5-2 SLC) played Delavan-Darien (17-1-2, 7-0 SLC) Tuesday at Delavan in the SLC Tournament title match. The Comets beat the Elks 5-0 Sept. 11 at home in the SLC’s regular season.

Delavan-Darien is ranked third in the state in Division 3 in the latest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association state rankings. Comets forward Juan Rocha leads the state in goals (41) and overall points (97).

Tuesday’s match marked the fourth time in as many years Elkhorn played for the SLC Tournament title.

Against Badger, Brad Baas and Ben Burrows scored for the Elks in the first half. Elkhorn led 2-0 at halftime. Chandler Kayser scored in the second half for Elkhorn.

“That was our best offensive game,” Elks coach BZ Kayser said. “We had them down 3-0 and let them back in. We had opportunities to go up 5-0.

“We played really well offensively. That was, by far, the best total game we played as a team. Obviously, we knew we had to that to be able to pull that off.”

The Elks celebrated Senior Day and played Racine Park to a 0-0 tie Oct. 2 in a non-conference match at home.

“We controlled the game a lot,” BZ Kayser said. “We outshot them 14-2 in the second half. We just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.”

Elkhorn closes its regular season today with a non-conference match against the Trojans (2-14-1) at East Troy.

The Elks are seeded second in Regional A in the WIAA Division 2 Wilmot Sectional Tournament, and will play Fort Atkinson (2-12-2) Oct. 14 at home. The Elks beat Fort 4-0 in a non-conference match Sept. 6 at home.
