Senior doubles team competes Wednesday in Jackson

Paige Kloth and Abi Goode (23-1) defeated Saint Thomas Moore’s Rachel Welch and Lily Samudio 6-1, 6-0 and advanced to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association sectional in Jackson this Wednesday.

The senior doubles team hopes to make it back to the WIAA state tournament where they finished in the top 16 last season.

“They are playing very good,” said head coach Dave Lindow. “We were moved to the toughest sectional in the state but I think our team is good enough to advance to state.”

The Trojan’s finished fifth in the sub-sectional behind four of the top 10 teams in the state.

“These are the best teams in the state and we even knocked a few of them out,” said Lindow.

Racine St. Catherine’s won the sub-sectional with 24 points followed by Racine Prairie (16) and Catholic Memorial and Kenosha St. Joes (14).

At No. 3 singles, senior Nicole Barr (22-4) upset Racine Prairies Hannah Cook 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

“Nicole lost the first set and did not give up,” said Lindow. “She kept at it and pulled off the upset. I’m very proud of her.”

Barr lost in the finals to Catie Fredericks of Catholic Memorial 3-6, 1-6.

At No. 4 singles, junior Kora Gaspervich (21-4) came out on top of Catholic Memorials Kate Mrochinski 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

“It was a hard fought match and Kora played great,” said Lindow. “She is our most improved player from last year and she has worked hard.”

Gaspervich lost in the finals to Liana Milisaukas of St. Joes 1-6. 0-6.

At No. 1 singles, senior Shauna Jacobs lost to Robyn Cabiting of Thomas More 1-6, 2-6 to end a very good season.

“Shauna finished over .500 for the season at No. 1 singles and that is a real accomplishment for her,” stated Lindow. “She has been a huge part of our program and will be missed.” Jacobs ended the season with a 13-12 record.

Senior Vanessa Tess, No. 2 singles, ran into sub-sectional champ Breana Thorton in the first round losing 1-6, 1-6.

“Vanessa finished the season winning six out of her last eight matches,” said Lindow. She got better as the season went on and I’m really proud of her.”

The Trojan’s No. 2 doubles team of Claire Loth and Vanessa Dingman lost in the first round to Catholic Memorial 1-6, 3-6 and the No. 3 doubles team of Lora Leach and Ariel Baxter lost in the first round to Racine St. Cat’s 3-6, 1-6. Loth will be lost to graduation but the other three players will return to lead the Trojan’s next season.

“Claire did a great job in her first her,” said Lindow. “The others will be back and work hard for next season.”

East Troy is looking to advance to the WIAA state tournament for the 17th consecutive season. They will play Brookfield Academy on Wednesday morning in Jackson.
