Comets deliver shutouts en route to sectional

By Kevin Cunningham

The Delavan-Darien High School boys soccer team began postseason WIAA Tournament action Oct. 24 when the No. 2-seeded Comets faced No. 15-seeded Mauston. Entering the contest, Delavan-Darien earned a first round bye, while Mauston defeated its first round opponent 7-0.

In the game between the Comets and Mauston, Delavan-Darien led 15-0 at halftime and ended with a 20-0 final score for DDHS, the highest ever under coach Mike Marse.

“I don’t know if that’s a school record or not. My dad’s like, ‘Oh, I think that’s a record!’ and I’m like, umm, I don’t know. It doesn’t matter if it is or not. By 20 minutes in, we had our second team in and we were still scoring goals. It comes to a point in that first half where, I’ve had some people say, why do you keep scoring goals,” Marse said.

The team is scheduled to take on No. 3-seeded Mount Horeb at 6 p.m. today, Oct. 31 at Badger High School in Lake Geneva. The winner of that match is supposed to compete on Saturday, Nov. 2 against the winner of No. 1 McFarland-No. 4 Platteville/Lancaster at Edgewood High School.
