Top five for Comets at invitational

By Kevin Cunningham

The Delavan-Darien High School boys and girls cross country teams participated in one meet this past week – an invitational held at Cecelia’s Golf Course on Tuesday, Oct. 8. They were able to run in good weather according to head coach Robyn Adair.

“(It) was a good opportunity to run on a rolling course,” Adair said. “We had great weather and although there were a couple soggy spots on the course, for the most part, it was dry.”

The boys team finished fifth as a team in the invitational led by senior Maleak Williams who took seventh individually with his time of 19:10. Grayson Morris, Delavan-Darien’s second-fastest runner according to Adair, was absent from the meet.

“This meet was a great chance to see where we are fitness-wise as we head toward this week’s conference meet at Waterford,” Adair said. “Waterford’s course is also a rolling one. We have worked hard all season on hills so I am excited to see how that translates to our performances at the conference meet.”

For the girls, Adair said the team has been struggling with injuries all season. Junior Emily Cameron ran a 27:59, good for 28th-place, while senior Susanna Zugliani ran a 29:01, which was good for 32nd. It was personal best times for both Zugliani and Cameron.

Up next for the Comets is the conference meet, which is scheduled for a 4:10 p.m. start time for the girls and a 4:40 p.m. start time for the boys on Friday, Oct. 18 at Waterford High School. On Saturday, Oct. 26, the team will participate in Sectionals.
