Comets finish fourth in SLC tournament

Oct. 13 was senior night for the Delavan-Darien High School volleyball team, and the Comets’ made the most of it, beating Badger High School 3-2.

Scores were 13-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-13 and 15-8. Jaida Speth led the team in kills with 13, while Claudia Nieuwenhuis totaled 28 digs in the match.

Cassidy Timmerman also led the Comets with three aces and 32 assists while Kenna Timmerman recorded three blocks. The five-set victory gave the team momentum heading into the Southern Lakes Conference varsity tournament Saturday.

Delavan-Darien entered as the No. 5 seed in the eight-team tournament, and faced off against the No. 4 seed, Waterford. The Comets moved on in three sets, winning 2-1 – 25-20, 23-25 and 25-22. After the No. 1-seeded Westosha got past the No. 8 seed, the two met in the second round and Westosha defeated the Comets 25-14, 25-12 and 25-7.

The Comets were then faced with a third-place match against the No. 2 seed, Union Grove. Union Grove won in three sets – 25-20, 25-17 and 25-18 – giving the Comets a fourth-place finish in the conference tournament. Burlington defeated Westosha for the tournament championship in three sets.

Cassidy Timmerman led the team in assists in all three matches, totaling 52 of them, and Nieuwenhuis performed the best in digs, recording 36 throughout the tournament. Next up for the Comets is regional play, which was scheduled to begin Tuesday at Delavan-Darien High School against Beloit Turner (9-12-1).
