The Delavan-Darien High School girls basketball team had only one game last week – a non-conference win over Palmyra-Eagle on Dec. 8.

The Comets (2-4) built a 9-2 first-quarter advantage on their way to the 44-33 victory.

“We finished inside against Palmyra and out-rebounded them,” D-DHS head coach Hank Johnson said. “We have talked all season now about beating teams to rebounds.”

Kenna Timmerman and Macie Hill led the Comets in rebounding, both getting nine.

The Comets had an eight-point halftime lead at 22-14 before outscoring the Panthers 12-9 in the third quarter to go up by 11.

Things were even at 10-10 for scoring in the fourth quarter, and the Comets picked up their second win of the year, 44-33.

Johnson said he was happy with the play of his team, but also saw the need for improvement in other areas.

“I thought our guards did a great job of getting the ball inside and our posts on finishing,” Johnson said. “But, we need to control the ball and not turn it over.”

Timmerman paced the Comets with 16 points and nine rebounds and Hill added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Shelby Gramly had seven points and two assists, and Alex Gonzales had five points and two assists.

Reece Torkelson added four points.

The Comets host Waterford on Friday night in a double header with the D-DHS boys basketball teams. Game time for the girls is 6 p.m.
