D-DHS grad’s team wins college conference title

Delavan-Darien High School graduate Michelle Wenzel helped to lead her Carthage College women’s basketball team to a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin conference title last weekend.

Carthage beat Elmhurst College 82-73 on Friday night and then went on to beat Illinois Wesleyan 63-59 for the title Saturday night.

In Friday night’s game Wenzel scored a game-high and career-high 37 points and added 10 rebounds. Wenzel shot 13 of 17 from the field and converted on 11 of 13 free throws.

Her 37 points set a conference record for most points scored in a tournament game.

Saturday night Wenzel scored 17 points and added four rebounds.

Saturday Wenzel was named to the CCIW First Team All-Conference for her play for the Lady Reds over the season.

Wenzel averaged 15 points per game to lead her team along with 7.9 rebounds per game.

Wenzel and her team are waiting to hear their opponent in the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship. The Lady Reds are ranked 10th in the nation and received an automatic bid with their conference championship.
