Fran Achen winners announced

Of the 148 photographs representing the work of 44 photographers, most of the awards for the eighth annual Fran Achen Photography Competition have been announced.

“The Fran Achen Photography Competition and show was a great success,” said Jeff McDonald, chair of the show and member of the Whitewater Arts Alliance Board of Directors. “The overall quality of the show is outstanding, and there have been more positive comments than we could count.”

The Best of Show Award went to McDonald for “Touch the Sky.” In the Accomplished category, Everett Long won first place for “Pelican and Patterns.” James Meldrum won second place for “Solitary.” Heather Browning won third place for “Abandoned Ship.”

In the Accomplished category, honorable mentions went to William Eklund for “See Both Sides,” Jim Marsala for “End of Summer,” McDonald for “River Walk and Meldrum for “Winter Calm.”

In the Amateur category, Robert Buell won first place for “Autumn in Vermont. Sylvia Linton won second place for “Milkweed in Flight.” Third place went to Jessica Osorio for “Dancing in the Violets.”

Honorable mentions in the Amateur category went to Robert Buell for “Fall Sumac,” Rhonda Kolander for “Maddona and Child,” Sandy Ott for “Gracie,” Johnathan Stutzman for “Camoflauged Owl” and Judy Wildermuth for “End of Day.”

In the Youth/Teen category, Aydon Clikeman took first, second and third places. Clikeman won first for “Glacier,” second for “Songbird” and third for “Jenna.”

The Viewers’ Choice Award still has to be given. That will be awarded on the last day of the exhibit after all votes are counted.

The Fran Achen exhibit is on display through July 30 at the Whitewater Arts Alliance’s Cultural Arts Center, 402 West Main Street, Whitewater. The exhibit is open Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
