The Whitewater High School Golf Program ended its varsity mini-match at the Whitewater Country Club last week by teeing off with the program’s inaugural Ball Drop fundraiser.

After the golf balls dumped from a skid steer –operated by WHS golfer Jake Walton – finally came to a rest, coach Chris Wiegman determined that the ball that had landed in the cup for the $100 first prize was assigned to Kris Ketterhagen. The next two balls closest to the cup were those spoken for by Bryan Taggert ($50) and Jack Wiegman ($25).

“I bought several tickets for the Ball Drop because I had several kids that are currently on the golf team when they were third grade students at Washington,” Ketterhagen, a teacher at Washington Elementary School, said.

Wiegman said in a time of limited funding, the money raised by the Ball Drop event will be used to purchase cold and wet-weather gear to make golfing more bearable during the often cold and rainy spring season.

He said he also plans to use the proceeds to purchase technical equipment, such as range finders, which will allow the WHS players to compete on a more even level with other teams that are provided with range finders by their school.

The purpose for the new apparel and equipment, according to Wiegman, is “to give the student-athletes the most opportunities possible within the sport of golfing.”

Wiegman said the team thanks the following: the Whitewater Country Club for the use of the practice green, Mike and Judy Majewski of Spring Creek for advertising the event and selling tickets, Walton Sand & Gravel for the use of a skid steer, and Shannon Cushman, a “golf mom,” for assisting the coaching staff in organizing this fundraiser.

The WHS team placed 6th in the match with Jimmy Cushman leading at 56 strokes, Jake Walton (57), Jon Caldwell (62), Jonathan Swifter (62) and Billie Jo Parker (69).

The other teams that competed in the meet were East Troy, Edgerton, Evansville, Jefferson and McFarland.
