Sex offender returned to Whitewater

A sex offender was expected to return to Whitewater Feb. 16, according to the Whitewater Police Department and the state Department of Corrections.

The offender, who is not named in the press release from the departments, is not wanted by police at this time and has served the sentence imposed by the court.

A team of local law enforcement representatives evaluates and makes decisions on the level of notification to the community for the pending release of sex offenders under state statute.

Citizen abuse of the information to threaten, intimidate, or harass registered sex offenders will not be tolerated, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Further, such abuse could subject those who commit such acts to criminal penalties and potentially end law enforcement’s ability to conduct community notification.

The Whitewater Police Department “remains committed to providing community education on personal safety through Protective Behaviors Training,” the release stated. Those interested in receiving the training should contact Sensitive Crimes Team Coordinator Tina Winger at (262) 473-0555.

Anyone with information regarding current criminal activity should call 911. To discuss specific concerns regarding sex offender registration or the release of an offender into the community contact the Walworth County Corrections Field Supervisor office, 220 S. County Rd. H, Elkhorn or (262) 741-6375.
