Heading into the dog days of summer, Whitewater officials have awarded a series of construction contracts aimed at improving roadways and one of the city’s oldest public buildings.

Plans to revitalize the Armory building downtown were completed July 21 when the Common Council voted to award Whitewater-based R.R. Walton and Company a $112,000 contract to replace the ramp and stairs at the aging facility.

R.R. Walton was the lowest of four companies submitting quotations to the city. The highest of the other three bids came in at $169,569.

The council had previously awarded a $49,225 contract to Johnson Creek-based Pioneer Roofing to replace the Armory’s roof. Pioneer also was awarded a separate $37,807 contract to refurbish the roof atop the Starin Park community building.

Several infrastructure projects benefiting residents also are in the works in the second-half of the summer.

Monroe-based E&N Hughes Company has been awarded a series of contracts. One is in the amount of $112,034 to upgrade the city’s storm sewer system along Pleasant Street and repave the roadway once the work is completed.

E&N’s second project with the city this summer clocks in at $67,875 and entails repaving portions of Franklin Street.

The Pleasant Street project was once tied to the oft-discussed work planned along George Street. Plans to delve into a heavy construction project on George Street ultimately were postponed and will be taken up next year.

In other business July 21, the council made an amendment to the city’s salary resolution that was initially adopted early this year. Changes were made to accommodate a newly defined executive assistant position and make a few modifications to salaries within the recently incorporated fire and rescue department.

This is the fourth time the city has revised its salary resolution since it was adopted.
