Four charged in ‘shots fired’ call

City officials say this was not a random act of violence

In the early morning hours last Friday, Whitewater Police responded to a report of shots fired but say the incident involved a specific group of individuals, all four of whom have now been charged, according to a press release.

The police department received a call of shots fired at the University Garden Apartments, 370 N. Tratt St., just after 4 a.m. July 18. The initial complaint, according to the press release, involved several individuals fighting in the hallway and a shot being fired during the altercation.

With assistance from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Police Services and the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department, an investigation ensued, the release stated.

All parties involved in the incident were located, including two suspects who were stopped on Highway 12 by the sheriff’s office. A gun was recovered from the vehicle and was taken into evidence along with the vehicle involved.

Four individuals were charged with several crimes, according to the press release, to include: first degree recklessly endangering safety, party to a crime of first degree recklessly endangering safety, disorderly conduct while armed and party to a crime of disorderly conduct while armed. More charges may follow, the department reported.

The Whitewater Police Department said this was not a random act of violence and the incident involved a specific group of individuals who had been involved in a previous altercation earlier in the evening.
