Last Saturday, in conjunction with Wisconsin’s free fishing day, nearly 50 young fisherman – or those set on learning more about the sport – participated in a local event in Whitewater.

Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater/Community Optimist Club, the June 7 Fishing Derby was held from 9 a.m. to noon and saw its biggest number of participants to this day with 49 kids from 18 months to 15 years old, along with 11 volunteers.

According to event organizers, the morning was complete with “sunshine, good food and high-spirited anglers.” Credit for the increase in turnout is being given to many sources including flyers, radio, the Whitewater Banner, the Whitewater Register, and of course, word of mouth.

In other optimist club news, the Whitewater Relay For Life event is fast approaching, slated Saturday, June 28, from 3 p.m. to midnight. The event provides local residents the chance to help in the fight against cancer.

Those interested in joining the optimist club’s team for the Relay for Life are asked to contact Kate Ksobiech at ksobieck@uww.edu or Jan Olson at olsonj@uww.edu. The team is also still accepting donations.
