Two people injured in crash Monday

A crash in Whitewater early Monday afternoon involving two trucks – one of which was a semi – resulted in two people suffering serious injuries and a portion of Highway 12 being closed for about three hours.

According to a press release, at approximately 12:32 p.m. April 14, Walworth County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a report of a crash with serious injuries at the intersection of Highway 12 and Walworth Avenue in the City of Whitewater.

The initial investigation revealed that a semi-truck with trailer allegedly failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic while attempting a left-hand turn. Both vehicles had a green light to proceed straight through the intersection.  Witnesses at the scene confirmed the incident occurred in this manner, the press release stated.

The driver of the semi-truck, identified as Mouh Seguir Hammoutene, 43, of San Antonio, Texas, was cited at the scene for Failure To Yield while making a left turn. He was operating a 2012 Freightliner semi-truck with Great Dane trailer and was traveling eastbound on Highway 12 prior to making this turn.

The other driver, identified as Kenneth Paul, 52, of Milwaukee, was operating a 1998 Ford Econoline E-350 truck and was traveling westbound on Highway 12 prior to the crash. The passenger in Paul’s vehicle is identified as David D. Williams, 33, also of Milwaukee.

Hammoutene, according to the press release, sustained no apparent injuries and was not transported from the scene.

Paul sustained serious chest injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital. Williams sustained severe lower leg injuries as well as chest injuries and was also taken by ground ambulance to an area hospital. No further information on their conditions was known at the time.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Crash Investigation Unit and Truck Inspector were summoned to the scene. Additionally, members of the city of Whitewater Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol and Whitewater Fire Department and Rescue members assisted on scene.
