The beauty and creativity of movement comes to life in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Theatre/Dance Department’s annual dance performance, DanceScapes.

Performances will take place Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday, April 7-8 at 7:30 p.m. in Barnett Theatre in Greenhill Center of the Arts. This event traditionally sells out therefore, advance purchase is recommended.

Led by artistic director Barbara Grubel, DanceScapes ’14 allows UW-Whitewater students to choreograph and perform in a variety of dance pieces. Faculty members Anna Brueggeman, Grubel, Robin Pettersen (emeritus) and guest choreographer, Daniel Stark, have also choreographed pieces for the performances.

Once again DanceScapes offers a range of creative works in a mix of dance, music, and multi-media abstracted from various real world elements in collaboration with choreographer Stacey Kondrakiewicz and College of Arts and Communication technology coordinator, Dale Kaminski, using the “Isadora” computer program.

Prior to the performance on Sunday, April 6, there will be a silent auction to raise funds to support the dance program. Funds will support bringing in visiting artists, accompanists for classes and other supplies for the dance program. Items in the silent auction include a Dancing with the Stars canvas print featuring Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd print signed by both, Amos Kennedy prints, Schomer Lichtner prints, and more.

This year’s guest artist, Daniel Stark, is an accomplished dancer and choreographer, currently teaching at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Stark and his dancers worked together for six full days during winter break to develop the piece and rehearse. His piece revolves around strangers being brought together due to circumstance who are then forced to interact. It explores how forced interaction can change lead to change and how the strangers in the piece change because of it. Stark has enjoyed working with the students from UW-Whitewater and says they are very focused, have great attitudes, and are open to new ideas.
