While putting together a dollhouse for his grandniece, Bill von Rohr and his wife, Nancy, had an idea.

“We thought it would be neat to talk to the library, which is really one of the gems in the community, and offer to donate a dollhouse to them for a fundraiser,” Bill von Rohr said.

They got in touch with Powers Memorial Library librarian, Kathy Hookham, and presented their idea. She, in turn, discussed it with members of the library board, including Lori Troyer and Reyna Kessler. Soon after, the three of them made a trip to the von Rohr’s.

“He showed us the one he made for his grandniece and offered to make one for the library. We loved it and thought a raffle was a great idea so we picked out a design and the colors,” Hookham said.

The dollhouse was unveiled Sept. 9 at the library. It’s yellow with dark blue trim and features an American flag, tri-color flowers in planters on the railing of the porch and of course, a bookcase complete with several miniature books.

Raffle tickets for the dollhouse – at a modest price of $1 or six for $5 – will go on sale at the library beginning Monday, Sept. 23. Though an exact date has yet to be decided, the drawing for the dollhouse raffle will be held in December, in time to be a one-of-a-kind Christmas gift.

Von Rohr, who estimated that he spent 50-60 hours on the dollhouse, said it was about promoting and supporting the local library – for which Hookham is appreciative.

“What a great way to give us a boost,” she said.
