Whitewater to participate in mock tornado warning

Whitewater will participate in a statewide tornado drill at 1:45 p.m. April 18.

Tornado sirens will sound at 1:45 p.m. except in the case of actual inclement weather.

Gov. Scott Walker has proclaimed April 15 to 19 Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin. During that week, school administrators, safety officers and faculty are asked to go over procedures needed when severe weather strikes to ensure that staff and students are prepared.

Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually. Last year, the National Weather Service reported four tornadoes in the state. The strongest tornado, rated EF2, hit near Patch Grove in Grant County on Sept. 4. No fatalities or injuries occurred with the tornadoes.

The April 18 tornado drill is an ideal opportunity for school staff and students to practice their safety procedures for severe weather, said Wisconsin Division of Emergency Management Administrator Brian Satula.
