Work on Highway 14 to begin

Thirty-six hour full roadway closure scheduled

On July 12, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation began a six-mile resurfacing project on Highway 14 from Prairie Drive to County Highway K through the towns of Walworth and Sharon and the Village of Walworth.

The project will consist of removing and repaving two inches of asphaltic pavement, base patching pavement, signing and pavement marking and improving curb ramps. The project will also improve the radius at the highway 14 and 67 intersection to allow semi-trucks to turn right without encroaching into the opposing lane.

The contractor, Rock Road Companies Inc., plans to complete the $1.4 million project in late summer. The schedule of work is weather dependent and subject to change.

Traffic will be maintained under flagging operations, in which bi-directional traffic will be permitted to travel through the work zone in a single open lane. However, a short-term full closure of Highway 14 near Elm Street in Walworth will be required for culvert pipe replacement under the roadway. The 36-hour closure is anticipated to take place the week of July 24. The detour is as follows:

  • Highway 14 eastbound traffic will be detoured via Interstate 43 north to exit at Highway 50. Traffic will proceed east on Highway 50 to County Highway F and Highway 67 south. It will follow Highway 67 south to reconnect with Highway 14.
  • Highway 14 westbound traffic will be detoured west on Highway 67 south to County Highway K north to reconnect to Highway 14.

Sidewalk closures are required for curb ramp improvements within the village limits. Whereever possible, sidewalks will be detoured. Where it is not possible for sidewalks to be detoured, sidewalk closures will be limited to 48 hours.

A project website can be found on 511 Wisconsin at https://projects.511wi.gov/14walw/. This summer’s work differs from an earlier planned reconstruction project that would’ve reconfigured Highway 14 though the village. That project is anticipated to be constructed in 2023.
