Local kids attend Safety Town classes

Safety Town was held at Walworth Grade School, June 24 through 29 as part of the summer enrichment program offered.

Nearly 20 local kids attended each of the two classes available, one in the morning, the other in the afternoon.

      Alexa Clary served as an assistant while the following teen instructors led the classes: Molly Knull, Henry Koerner, Valeria Lopez, Lindsay McIntyre, Mallory Melson, Riley Summers and Chloe Weborg in the morning class; Carter Beckford, Autumn Goodell, AJ Hartman, Henry Koerner, Olivia Patek and Makayla Swanson in the afternoon class.

Participants were kept busy throughout the week, learning about many different facets of safety.

Guests that spoke to the classes during the week were: Larry and Wendy Markow – Train Safety; Danelle Craig and Brea Stiglitz – bus safety; Dr. Kelly Roy (with Fletcher, Sven and Wally Fenway) of Geneva Lakes Animal Hospital – animal safety; Chris Bestor of Aurora Health Care – poison safety; Cathy Boldger – Playground and Toy Safety; Ted Pankau of Lake Geneva Water Safety Patrol – water safety, and; Kathy Smith and Randy Maynard of the fire department/rescue squad – fire safety.

Safety Town Police Officers, Chief Andy Long and officer Jessie Lewin discussed seat belt safety and other measures needed in vehicles, pedestrian safety including crosswalks, bicycle safety and stranger danger.

The classes took field trips to the police and fire departments, played games, did crafts and had time to journal what they learned.

At the close of the programs, there was Graduation with parents, family members and friends of participants invited.
