Sharon Community School has a new addition to its primary playground, a Buddy Bench in memory of Claudette Lee.

“Lee was a dedicated aide at the Sharon Community School for 21 years,” according to Lillian Henderson, district administrator.

Henderson said the community supported a fundraiser to help with Lee’s medical bills when she was rushed to the University of Chicago in December of 2015.

“Sadly, Mrs. Lee died just prior to the February 2016 fundraiser,” she said.

“The Sharon School Teacher Parent Association purchased a Buddy Bench in recognition of Mrs. Lee’s many years nurturing kindergarten students in our school,” Henderson said.

A Buddy Bench provides students with a way to signal other students on a playground that they are lonely and looking for someone to ask them to play.

“Our hope is that Mrs. Lee’s commitment to making all children feel welcome will carry on through this Buddy Bench,” Henderson said.
