Local man injured when other vehicle hit ice, struck his SUV

Icy roads are to blame for a two-vehicle crash near Walworth last Thursday that killed a Harvard, Ill. man and injured a man from Fontana.

Walworth Fire and Rescue units and Walworth County Sheriff’s Department deputies were dispatched to the scene on Highway 14 just south of the Village of Walworth, at 6:44 a.m., March 2, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Department.

Luis Gutierrez-Fernandez, 39, of Harvard, Ill., was driving northbound on Highway 14 in a 2001 Hyundai. He reportedly hit icy pavement and lost control of his vehicle, causing him to cross into the path of a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Steven Johnson, 59, of Fontana, according to the press release.

The two men were both the sole occupants in their vehicles. Johnson was transported to a local hospital with injuries. Gutierrez-Fernandez was pronounced dead at the scene by a Walworth County Medical Examiner, the release stated.

Other agencies that responded to the scene included the Walworth, Fontana and Sharon police departments, Mercy MD-1 and Paratech.

The crash remains under investigation.
