The Village of Walworth Plan Commission opted in favor of pulling together an ad hoc committee to help Trustee Tom Connelly Jr. pull together more on the possibility of an alternate route for truck traffic.

Connelly, who has done a lot of leg work on the route that would send truck traffic out and around the village, said Monday it’s quickly becoming a lot of work and it would be beneficial to put a smaller group together to focus slowly on the Highway K truck route and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s proposed plan for Highway 14.

While Chairman Todd Watters said he agrees with Trustee David Rasmussen in the idea the proposed Highway 14 plan is basically on the shelf for the time being, the concept of an alternative truck route is something he’s not opposed to a committee further exploring it.

Connelly said Monday that the other affected towns and villages have already expressed interest in the idea.

“Joe Abell’s exact quote is that if you can guarantee the truck’s will stay on (highways) 67 and K, he’s 100 percent for it,” Connelly said about the Town of Walworth Board chairman.

“He’s favorable to it if the truck’s stay on the route. He’s worried they’re going to veer onto a county road that isn’t the right class for trucks.”

In order for a truck route down county roads to be established, Connelly said Walworth County government would first have to approve it. Then, he said, it would become a question of who pays for the truck route.
