Scherrer to lead construction of new YMCA

Scherrer Construction, of Burlington, will be the construction management firm for the new YMCA facility in Lake Geneva, the organization announced last week.

The new facility will be located at N2085 County Trunk H (near Highway 120 and H), two miles south of the YMCA’s current location.

“We are honored and privileged to be selected as the construction management firm for the new Geneva Lakes Family YMCA, said Jim Scherrer, President Scherrer Construction Company. “The YMCA is a pillar of hope and strength in our community and we are inspired to be part of a project that will have a lasting impact on so many lives.”

In addition, the construction team will consist of Zimmerman Architectural Studios and Harwood Engineering Consultants.

“It is exciting to see all these companies come together as we move closer to construction. I am confident in our selection process and the amazing new facility that will be designed and built for our members and guests” offers Mike Kramp, CEO Geneva Lakes Family YMCA.

At a minimum, the new facility will include additional space for parking, fitness, child care, aquatics, camps and sports programming, according to the organization.

The purchase of the new site for $1.5 million was completed on Sept. 30, having been approved with overwhelming support by the Geneva Lakes Family YMCA Board of Directors, according to the YMCA.

The purchase was made possible with seed gifts from the entire Geneva Lakes Family YMCA Board of Directors and some additional gifts from former Board and committee members.

The size of this land will position the YMCA for additional amenities and future growth both in the building and on the outdoor campus, YMCA officials said.

Over the winter months, the YMCA will be seeking input from staff, board, volunteers, members, guests and the community at large to help create the next YMCA.

Future plans include entering into a capital campaign during Spring 2020, with possible construction beginning in 2021. Plans will be to sell the current property at 203 S. Wells Street at the appropriate time.

The Geneva Lakes Family YMCA has been in the Geneva Lakes area for more than 130 years, and currently serves more than 6,900 members from 60 different communities. It also serves as the City of Lake Geneva Sports and Recreation Department.
