Ceiling, chimney catch fire in Madison Street home

A fireplace chimney and ceiling in a single-family home at 1133 Madison St. caught fire at about 11:10 p.m. Saturday, according to the Lake Geneva Fire Department.

The resident of the home left the house and called 911 after noticing light smoke and the wall above the fireplace turning brown, according to a press release from the department.

Firefighters found fire in the area of the chimney and ceiling, made an aggressive interior attack and quickly knocked down the fire, according to the release. Truck crews ventilated the roof and assisted with overhaul and salvage. Crews cleared the scene at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, according to the department.

The living room and fireplace sustained extensive damage, but no one was injured, according to the department. The cause and origin of the fire remained under investigation as of Sunday.

“Our crews worked hard and did a great job, containing the fire and preventing further loss,” said Chief John Peters. “We are grateful there were no injuries, since nighttime fires can be very dangerous for sleeping residents. We encourage everyone to have fireplace chimneys cleaned and inspected regularly, as well as having working smoke detectors.”
