EAHS student named AXA Achiever

Phillip Meersman, a senior at Elkhorn Area High School, was recently named an AXA Achiever, for “demonstrating exemplary leadership skills and a commitment to making a positive contribution to the world,” a press release from AXA states.

AXA, a financial protection and retirement industry leader, awarded scholarships to more than 370 high school students. “Through their outstanding achievements, the students are driving awareness and innovation in such areas as anti-bullying, hunger, teen suicide, health and financial literacy.” the release states.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the AXA Achievement program, which has provided more than $25 million in scholarships to more than 6,000 students since its inception in 2003. The students have represented all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and local communities where AXA operates, including Elkhorn.

Meersman was awarded a one-time scholarship of $2,500 and Elkhorn Area High School a $1,000 grant to be used for educational development.

Our winners are remarkable young people whose hard work, dedication to their communities and commitment to innovation demonstrate their passion to facilitate change on a global scale. Presenting the scholarship to Meersman was Javan Wehmeier, a financial advisor at the local AXA Advisors office, 15 S. Lincoln St., Suite 3, Elkhorn.
