UW-Extension offers Master Gardener training

The University of Wisconsin-Extension of Walworth County is accepting registration for the Level I Master Gardener Volunteer program.

The program is designed through the University of Wisconsin to train people in all areas of horticulture, who in turn aid University of Wisconsin-Extension educators by using their knowledge to volunteer for projects to benefit their local communities and help people better understand horticulture and the environment.

Master Gardener Volunteers operate under UW-Extension organizational policies when delivering information to the public.

The classes are interactive and designed for everyone from beginners to experienced gardeners. To become a certified Master Gardener Volunteer, participants must be at least 18 years old, participate in Level 1 training, pass the open-book take-home exam with a score of 70 percent or better, and complete a minimum of 24 volunteer hours by Sept. 1, 2018.

The class fee is $200, and payment plans are available. The fee includes a copy of the Wisconsin Master Gardener program manual, all class materials, name badge, and a one-year membership to the Walworth County Master Gardener Association and the Wisconsin Master Gardener Association.

Most classes will be at the Walworth County Government Center, 100 W. Walworth St., Elkhorn, from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Feb. 21.

Registration forms and dates are available at walworth.uwex.edu or by contacting Chrissy Wen, UW-Extension horticulture educator, at (262) 741-4951 or christine.wen@ces.uwex.edu.
