Change it or leaf it?

While the city has yet to make a decision on how will approach leaf collection in the future, one thing is for certain; bagged leaf collection is no longer viewed as a viable option.

At the April 25 City of Elkhorn Municipal Services and Utilities Committee meeting, City Administrator Sam Tapson said the city has an obligation to let Advanced Disposal know of its plans going forward.

At that time, Tapson said while it seems pretty clear that bagged leaf collection is not an option, he doesn’t think bringing the program in-house – meaning the city’s public works department would handle leaf collection – is a viable or feasible option either.

With an in-house service, Tapson said he thinks the city will find its spending more money and exhausting man-hours.

Tapson said Monday night something the city might want to consider is reorganizing the collection of leaves on a more “route-sensitive basis,” essentially looking at where more leaves are accumulating and dedicating more time to those areas of the city.

“I think it’s more of a case of tweaking the way in which the routes are organized as opposed to trying to do it in-house,” he said.
