The City of Elkhorn Common Council is expected to take a vote on its proposed 2016 budget at its bi-weekly council meeting Monday.

The proposed budget, prepared by city staff and reviewed by city alderman, calls for a $4.85 million tax levy, down slightly from the previously published $4.86 million levy. The City of Elkhorn Finance and Judicial Committee held it’s public budget hearing Monday night in the Council Chambers.

According to City Administrator Sam Tapson’s annual budget transmittal letter to the council, this year’s levy represents less than a 2 percent increase over last year and the tax levy before recent changes, $4.86 million, would result in a tax rate of about $7.98 for every $1,000 of assessed value. For an owner of a $100,000 home, this would mean the city portion of the homeowner’s tax bill would be about $798.              Tapson said Monday on a median value home in Elkhorn, homeowner’s would pay about $35 more in city taxes in the upcoming year.
