The Elkhorn Grand Ballroom Dance, sponsored by the Elkhorn Parks and Recreation District, is slated to kick off at 6:30 p.m. this Saturday in the Elkhorn Area High School Varsity Gym.

Richard Travis of the Elkhorn Parks and Recreation District said the event has the opportunity to be a large community event, noting it drew 74 people through the doors last February.

Travis, who is in charge of selecting music, said he received many compliments about the music choices last year, as he strays away from modern music and chooses more authentic, traditional music, such as cha-chas, bossa novas and salsas.

“People have been raving about the music,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of people telling me they want to come back for this years.”

Travis said this year, he will also be hosting a complimentary bossa nova dance lesson at 7:15 p.m., something he said is almost somewhat of a forgotten dance.

Travis said the dance also proves to be a great thing for the community economically as well, noting dancers are coming from all over the area including from Chicago, Oregon, Ill., Elk Grove, Ill., and Milwaukee.

Travis said it’s people like this coming into town earlier in the day and spending the night at local hotels that contribute to the local economy through shopping Elkhorn’s downtown prior to the dance, visiting local restaurants and establishments and just being a part of Elkhorn.

Doors for the dance open at 6:30 p.m. with the dance going from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Complimentary refreshments, as well as drawing and prizes will be available. Admission is $10.
