For many Elkhorn residents, the July 3 fireworks display in Elkhorn’s Sunset Park might have been a little less than pleasing or extraordinary.

However, the City of Elkhorn wants citizens to know it’s not something that has gone unnoticed.

Mayor Brian Olson said Monday night both he and alderman received numerous calls regarding Friday nights’ fireworks display and witnessed the fireworks display firsthand.

“I was there to witness the tragic display myself,” he said Monday night.

Olson said the city wants the community to know they are working with the company that does their fireworks display, and has for many years, to understand a better reasoning as to why the city’s display did not “go off as expected.”

Olson continued, noting the monies spent on the fireworks display do not come from taxpayer dollars, but from the 30 percent of the room tax the city receives annually.

The council approved a contract with Bartolotta Fireworks Co., Inc., in December of last year for this year’s fireworks display.

“We are looking into it and we, as a unified body, are not very pleased with the outcome of this Friday’s performance,” he said.
