Elkhorn’s Municipal Services and Utilities Committee voted unanimously in favor of a project that aims to update the four ball fields in Elkhorn’s Sunset Park.

The committee nixed the idea of completely re-constructing the four fields, at a cost of around $87,000 per field, at a meeting earlier this month. At that time, the committee discussed bringing the fields into a playable condition and directed City Engineer Gary Welsh to gather further information on that option for Monday’s meeting.

Monday night, Welsh said to committee members that he met with a representative from Midwest Athletic Fields, who then came back with a proposal.

As a part of the plan, Welsh said the two western fields in Sunset Park, located closer to Park Street, would be relocated slightly to the north, by a few feet, to accommodate a 250-foot outfield.

“It really benefited moving those outfields because the outfield to the north was larger than it needed to be,” he said. “So, we had some play there, we could move that.”

Furthermore, Welsh said they shifted the southernmost field to get it as far off Centralia Street, bordering the southern end of the park, as possible.
