Delavan residents escaped their burning house safely early Saturday when a passer-by roused them after noticing flames on their porch.

A person passing by a house at 222 Phoenix St. at about 3:30 a.m. saw the porch burning, called 911 and roused the sleeping residents by knocking on their windows, said Delavan police and fire Chief Tim O’Neill.

The occupants of the single family home, which is about a year old, got out of the house, and a cat was rescued from inside, O’Neill said.

Police who arrived on scene first knocked down the flames before the fire department arrived and extinguished the fire, he said.

O’Neill said the fire is still under investigation but appears to have been caused by smoking materials. The front porch and siding sustained substantial damage, but the interior of the house was not damaged, and the residents were able to stay there, he said.
