A Delavan man was expected to waive his preliminary hearing and enter a plea Feb. 26 on charges of burglarizing a Delavan home over a two-day period.

Juan V. Hernandez, 21, was charged Feb. 10 in Walworth County Circuit Court with two counts each of burglary of a building or dwelling as a party to a crime and felony bail jumping.

According to the criminal complaint:

Delavan police responded to a burglary at a Fourth Street home Feb. 5 where a motor had been removed from a freezer, and suspects had tried to remove parts from a refrigerator. A pair of pliers, side cutters and a vise grip were lying next to the appliances.

The owners of the home also reported that an X-Box gaming system had been taken, and they found fresh shoe impressions in the snow leading to the residence.

On Feb. 6, officers were against dispatched to the home where they saw two males run from the residence, get in a car, drive away and crash. Police Chief Tim O’Neill said the vehicle hit another car occupied by a woman and a young girl at Third Street and Walworth Avenue, and Hernandez and a 15-year-old boy fled on foot. Police caught Hernandez and the teenager at Hernandez’s residence, 118 E. Walworth Ave.

Hernandez admitted he and the boy burglarized the Fourth Street residence Feb. 5 and 6, according to the criminal complaint.

Hernandez was out on bond at the time on felony charges of burglary and theft.

O’Neill said the pair are suspected of seven other burglaries or thefts that have occurred over the past year. Police are investigating to substantiate those suspicions and determine whether they were involved in additional unsolved burglaries.
