Early election activity – or lack thereof – indicates local races could be largely uncontested in the spring election.

As of last week, only incumbents had taken out papers to seek election in the town and village of Darien and the town and city of Delavan.

Candidates have until 5 p.m. Jan. 7 to circulate and turn in nomination papers to be placed on the April 1 ballot.

City of Delavan

In the City of Delavan, the seats of Mayor Mel Nieuwenhuis, First District Alderman Gary Stebnitz, Second District Alderman Bruce DeWitt and Third District Alderman Jeff Johnson are up for election. As of last week, each of the incumbents except Stebnitz had taken out nomination papers. No one else had taken out papers to challenge them.

Village of Darien

In the Village of Darien, trustees Jim Abbott, Phil Putman and Bob Wenzel are up for re-election. All of them have taken out nomination papers.

Town of Delavan

In the Town of Delavan, the seats of supervisors Barb Militello and Chris Marsicano are up for election. Militello has turned in her declaration of candidacy, and Marsicano is circulating papers.

Town of Darien

In the Town of Darien, supervisors Jim Terpstra and Matt Smith are up for re-election. Smith has taken out papers, and Terpstra also intends to seek re-election, said Town Clerk Marilyn Larson.
