An Elkhorn woman was found dead in the northbound lanes of Interstate 43 by police in the early morning hours of Nov. 30.

According to a press release from the City of Elkhorn Police Department, on Nov. 30, 2014, at about 12:22 a.m., Elkhorn Police Department officers were dispatched to a report of a possible body in the roadway on Interstate 43 at the Highway 67 overpass within the City of Elkhorn. At the time of the call, the release said visibility was poor due to the dense fog.

Upon the arrival of officers, the release said the body of a female, who was later identified as Frances Schneeberger, 65 of Elkhorn, was located deceased in the north bound lane of Interstate 43.

Responding officers also observed a vehicle on the side of the Highway 67 southbound overpass that was running with the headlamps on, and according to the release, officers later learned the vehicle belonged to Schneeberger.

The release said initial investigation revealed Schneeberger sustained injuries consistent with a significant fall and while on the roadway, she was struck by an SUV driven by a 25-year-old Sharon man and might have been struck by another vehicle prior.

Traffic on Interstate 43 North was detoured for approximately two hours during the initial investigation. The Elkhorn Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol, who is assisting with the investigation.
