Graves won’t seek another term; endorses undersheriff

After 42 years in law enforcement – including 14 as Walworth County Sheriff – David Graves announced Friday that he will not seek another term in next fall’s election.

Graves, who made the announcement in a press release issued Friday morning, wasted no time in endorsing current Undersheriff Kurt Picknell to succeed him.

“Based on his education, years of experience, dedication, and personal values, I strongly believe that Undersheriff Kurt Picknell should be the next Walworth County Sheriff,” Graves said.

Graves began his career as a police aide with the Whitewater Police Department in 1972 and became a patrolman a year later at the age of 20. In 1976, Graves landed a job at the sheriff’s department and worked his way up to undersheriff before becoming sheriff.

In the press release, Graves credited his staff and took pride in his department’s efforts in recent years to maintain public safety while decreasing it’s operating budget.
