Genealogical Society requesting essays on ‘favorite ancestors’

The Walworth County Genealogical Society is sponsoring an essay contest in conjunction with its Family History Fair to be held October 12 at Faith Christian School, W5525 Wisconsin Highway 67, Williams Bay.

The contest is open to all children in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades living in Walworth County. The topic is “My Favorite Ancestor”. The WCGS has chosen to use the word “ancestor” loosely so the children may write about someone living or dead; possibly a grandparent that is still living, or a great-great-grandparent they have heard stories about. Adoptive and foster parents and other family members are also to be considered as ancestors.

All schools in Walworth County, as well as the libraries in the Lakeshore System, have the WCGS Essay forms for the contest. If not, contact us for a copy of the rules or check out the website at www.walworthcgs.com. Visitors are also welcome to stop at the WCGS Library on the second floor of the Matheson Memorial Library, 101 N. Wisconsin Street, Elkhorn.

This contest encourages English and history teachers, as well as librarians, to become involved with students. Home-schools are also encouraged to participate. The deadline to send in the essays is Sept. 27. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at 10 a.m. at the Oct. 12 Family History Fair.
